Our Personal Story
(At least a little of it . . . )
by Janet Shay, Owner
"I’ve always loved books. I started to say I’ve always loved to read books. But it isn’t that simple. I love to hold them, smell them, turn their pages and line them up on bookshelves. Someone once told me you can’t love an inanimate object. I’ll talk to myself about that another time—maybe when technology does with books what it’s done to my dad’s black typewriter with
the left-hand return. Until then I really do love books!
"I spent the first part of my growing up years in Redondo Beach, California. My mother took us often to the public library—a
three-story Spanish colonial on a sprawling lawn atop a knoll looking out on the Pacific Ocean. As a young girl, I was fascinated
by the whispered silence, those little white check-out cards, the musty smell and the creaky floors. I think that is where my appreciation of books began.
"I once wanted to be a candy wrapper, always a school teacher, sometimes a singer, periodically a portrait artist and now and then a fiddle player. But not once through all of those daydreams did I forgo my fascination with books.
"I wrote poetry when young, skits and songs when less than young. The dramatic musical, The Woodcarver, was performed at our church during Christmas. My fictional story, "The Sunday Shirt," and my humorous account of life in a modern-day library, "Silence Isn't as Golden as it Used to Be," were published in national magazines. Currently I’m writing a historical novel and a biographical compilation. God has allowed me to do all of this. Given my own efforts it would still be in my dreams.
I’ve recently self-published an audio book entitled The Boy Who Wouldn't Give Up. It is the first in a children's series called BIG WORDS FOR GOD'S LITTLE PEOPLE. Does my choice to self-publish mean I couldn't get a big publisher to pick it up? I don’t know. I didn’t ask a big publisher. I figured I cared more for that litte story than just about anyone else. Besides, my own company, Sable Creek Press, accepted it for publication. Why go further?
